Keep the watermark readable but not overpowering

A good watermark is clear enough to notice yet light enough that the page underneath is still readable. If the mark is too dark, it hides the content. If it is too faint, no one sees it. COPY or DUPLICATE says this is not the original record. Picking the word that fits the situation prevents confusion later, especially when a document passes through several hands. If more than one status applies, choose the one the reader most needs to see first, since stacking several words on a page makes each of them harder to read.
